Although this haunting tune has the flavor and sentiment of a traditional Irish folk song, it was composed in 1995 by multifaceted artist Padraigin Ni Uallachain. Her inspiration for the song was the idea that when we are happy or sad, the elements and the natural world are aligned with our feelings. From the wistful lyrics of the song; Down by the river there's a tall willow tree, who weeps all night for you and me. This evocative setting for band follows this sentiment through peaks and valleys of sound and emotion. Dur: 3:10.

Written by British composer George Butterworth in 1913, this classic work is based on two folk songs - “The Banks of Green Willow†and “Green Bushes†(the latter also appearing in works by Grainger and Vaughan Williams). Butterworth died in World War I at the age of 31, and this composition remains his most popular, regarded as an anthem for “Unknown Soldiers.†Here is a masterful setting for winds adapted by Robert Longfield. Dur: 3:50.

A copse is a thicket of trees and bushes that may be found in a meadow or in open land. In England, a copse will often be found on a moor. A copse needs a source of water that is usually a stream, small river or pond. A copse has abundant plant and animal life because it provides the perfect habitat and shelter for moisture loving plants, insects, small mammals, rodents, reptiles, and birds. If you were walking through the copse in the midst of willow trees, bluebells and march marigolds, you would see beautiful butterflies, dragonflies and moths. You might see a frog or toad jumping on the banks of the pond and you would hear the call of numerous birds. Ornithologists often spend many hours watching and counting birds in and around a copse. Migrating birds such as geese and herons may also be spotted at certain times of the year. If you sit very quietly, you might catch sight of a red fox, a rabbit or squirrel. A copse is a happy place to spend an afternoon or to go for a walk. Perhaps you will get to visit a nature preserve near your home where you can observe the wonderful world of the woodland wild life that can be found in abundance in a copse. This is the latest â?? and 7th â?? in an a cappella series going back three decades in which the texts are taken from Shakespeare's plays. â??Come Unto These Yellow Sandsâ? is a gentle invitation to the listener, at least until the animals take over. â??Thou Canst Not Hit It,â? in this interpretation, is a song about trying to hit the high and low notes. Surrounded by comedy and tragedy, â??Honour, Riches, Marriage-Blessingâ? is the idyllic center of the set. â??O Sweet Oliver,â? with its dueling boy and girl choirs, leads into â??Willow, Willow,â? where the poem's word repetitions inspire the driving rhythm.

The composer was drawn to the beautiful stillness and sadness of the poem by Christina Rossetti, which transcend its rigid sonnet structure, and allude via the epigraph to the mysterious Willow-Wood cycle by Christina's brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The music suggests a division of the poem into three stanzas, alternating with tranquil interludes (using the opening melody) representing the 'willow-wood' of the title, so that the listener is constantly reminded of the gentle surroundings. As the intensity of the text increases, so does the astringency of dissonance in the verses, reaching its apogee just before consonance breaks through at the crucial phrase 'one moment joined'. The simplicity of the vocal writing conveys the serenity of the setting, while simultaneously suggesting the austere melancholy of the lovers. An Echo from Willow-Wood was the winner of the Stainer & Bell Award for Choral Composition 2015.

Rich choral textures and a yearning piano part relate a story of absent love, making this a top pick for a contest ballad slot. Rushing river pass me by, winding to the deep blue sea … Oh, willow, weeping willow, weep for me..

John Philip Sousa’s love of horses is reflected in this delightful march composition, The Black Horse Troop. Composed in 1924 for Troop A of the Cleveland National Guard, this wonderful march has a character and swagger unlike any other. The 6/8 meter and Sousa’s melodic genius create an astonishing musical image of a horseback unit on the move. One of the March King’s most beloved and most frequently requested marches. Outstanding!
