Little Tree consists of three short choral settings of poems by E.E.Cummings with a total duration of around 6 minutes. The first song Little tree is in three voices(SSA); the next movement I carry your heartwith me progresses into four voices; the final song now is a ship opens briefly with two solo voices but ends in 6 vocal parts. Accompanying all three pieces is a simple marimba part which acts as a continuoinstrument. In the opening movement it simply doubles the lowest vocal part; in the later pieces it provides a simple basis for the choral harmony. Judith Weir's wonderful vocal score for SSA and Marimba accompaniment. Idealfor children and female voiced choirs.

Judith Weir’s work is often inspired by narrative folklore and theatre. This creepy-crawly work was inspired by the novel Die Schwarze Spinne by Jeremias Gotthelf a tale about an evil venomous spider including heartless Count heroic village maiden and a truly otherworldly Green Huntsman and a 1983 news story about the mysterious deaths of the archaeologists who opened the tomb of Casimir IV in Krakow in the 1970’s. There are spoken parts bridging the two stories.Weir employs many musical languages in this alternately boisterous and sinister work: patter songs church hymns recitativo among them. Weir is not at all precious about voicing recommending that allthe roles be sung at any convenient octave Altos substituting for basses at the octave if a children’s Chorus is performing the work. The one-act structure works well for young performers.Judith Weir is one of Britain’s most prolific and successful composers widely known for her operas like The Vanishing Bridegroom and A Night At The Chinese Opera and her many Choral works as well as her pieces for Strings and Piano. She was Artistic Director of the Spitalfields Festival and is a professor at Cardiff University.

Judith Weir: My Piano Quartet (2000) is part of an extended series of works for piano and strings which I have written over the last twenty years - although I didn't know it was going to be a series when I wrote the first of theseworks Music for 247 Strings in 1980. During this period it has been far more usual for composers to write for mixed wind and string ensembles. But I continued (and still continue) to be fascinated by the potential of stringsand piano; particularly the chance to write for the instruments as soloists or as a group and often to use both these options simultaneously. Judith Weir's Day Break Shadows Flee for solo Piano. This 10 minute work was commissioned by BBC Radio 3. It was first performed by Benjamin Grosvenor on 1st September 2014 as part of the PromsChamber Music Series at Cadogan Hall.'Day Break Shadows Flee written for Benjamin Grosvenor is a Two-Part Invention a Piano solo composition in which the two hands work in close co-ordination butindependently. My intention was generally to avoid using thick chords (although octaves and other clear sonorities are included) while allowing both the right and left-hand lines to be free mobile and expressive. The treble andbass sectors of the keyboard are clearly contrasted and often widely separated. In atmosphere and expression the music is another kind of two-part invention contrasting bright upwards-arching phrases (heard at the opening andevoking the arrival of light at the beginning of the day) with veiled mysterious scurryings suggesting the stranger more nervous life lived at night and in the early morning.' - Judith Weir

These three musical presentations of stories were written to illustrate thoughts about the many ways in which music helps and hinders storytelling. The three short settings use a variety of vocal styles. Instrumental Work Violoncelle, Piano Chester

These three pieces for cello and piano are meditations – personal secular and musical – on images from religious poetry. The title of No. 1 Angels bending near the earth comes from a carol which begins‘It came upon the midnight clear’ by the Massachusetts pastor and poet Edmund Sears. The full reference is to “angels bending near the earth/to touch their harps of gold” and this is the inspiration forthe music with piano arpeggios swooping down over the rich central band of sound produced by the cello. No. 2’s title In death’s dark vale is a brief paraphrase (from a Scottish hymnal) of Psalm 23; thefull quotation is “yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil”. The image here is of human life lived against the prospect of impending death. The cello plays a hasty self-absorbed continuo whilst around it piano motifs and chords of different height and depth create an evolving backdrop. No. 3 O sapientia is the only movement which quotes a musical original; Hildegard ofBingen’s hymn O virtus sapientiae –“O strength of wisdom”. This is a calm elegaic set of variations for the cello on Hildegard’s melody accompanied by mostly bright optimistic refl ections from thepiano. Commissioned by cellist Jonathan Miller of Boston MA. First performance on 23 September 2016 at Hamilton Hall Salem MA by Jonathan Miller (cello) and Randall Hodgkinson (piano)

Two Human Hymns comprises of settings for six-part choir and organ of two poems ...(+)
Two Human Hymns comprises of settings for six-part choir and organ of two poems by 17th century English poets who are almost exact contemporaries; George Herbert and Henry King. The music for the choir is mostly composedin simple songlike shapes which are little hymns. The texts though clearly relate to Christian beliefs could be more widely applicable to all human experience which is why they have called them 'Human Hymns'.Thus Love BadeMe Welcome (G.Herbert) whilst obviously a Christian allegory can be read as a gently hypnotic love song and it is attempted to capture something of this atmosphere in the setting. Like to the Falling of a Star (H.King) although it mentions no God could be a Calvinist sermon capping its lovely account of the wonders of nature with an almost operatically sinister denouement. In the first half of the piece the music bubbles upwards fresh andoptimistic; in the second half like all those doomed sinners it is going down down down. The first performance was given by University of Aberdeen Chapel Choir on 22nd October 1995. Duration: c.7 minutes.

Written for two double basses. This work is warmly dedicated to Peter Buckoke and Judith Kleinman who gave the first performance at the Purcell Room London on 29th March 2006. Q. What sound man can create will chaseElephants away? Hill van Schalkwyk Republic of South Africa. A. Elephants can create an extremely low pitch rumble sound that humans can't hear but that indicates danger to other elephants. Reproducing that sound would chaseelephants away. But it is not easy to record such a sound. It is also possible that an elephant will leave if it hears the roar of a lion. That sound may be easier to obtain. I doubt if there is a sound that a human can makethat would bother an elephant.
