This commission was supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture in Iceland and is dedicated to Hilmar Örn Agnarsson and The South Iceland Chamber Choir.The Three Shakespeare Sonnets was one of thefirst works that Tavener composed after serious illness in 2007. He wanted to pay tribute to his wife Maryanna who nursed him back to some degree of health so he turned to the Shakespeare Sonnets and was delighted tofind that they brought forth music once again after having been silent for so long.

Kali-Yuga is a short symbolic piece for choirs representing in a simple almost child-like way the last days of the Kali-Yuga the Dark Age of Hinduism. We live in these days. The ?ugliness? of the modern world is portrayedin the first two sections as the singers from Choir II are given a free rein to represent ?triviality? in the first song and ?ugliness? in the second while the singing chorus in Choir I describes the events in Schuon?s Germanpoetry. The third section represents ?weeping humanity? personified by the two women and two men from the choirs as the rest sing with great dignity and solemnity about the Kali-Yuga.The musical material is tightly knitthroughout and the performance should be as vivid and imaginative as possible.

The mood is of quiet ecstasy in praise of the Holy Motherof God whose womb He made a throne and whose belly He made more spacious than the Heavens.Ideally the music is performed in a large acoustic hall so that the echoes can be heard to die away in the commas between thevarious sections. The sound should be warm rich and sonorous.

Prayer of the Heart was inspired by The Chain of Hope. This charitable organisation raises money for the treatment of heart disorders in children including Marfan’s Syndrome of which John Tavener is a sufferer. Thesinger should sit on a low stool bowing towards the heart. This facilitates the soul’s concentration and its unification in ecstasy. The Prayer of the Heart is prayed ceaselessly day and night awake or sleeping becauseit has become at one with the beating of the heart... Silence peace sweetness of union with God... The Prayer is not usually sounded with the voice at all it is silent. Therefore the music must be played and sungintensely quietly with no physical effort. The Byzantine bell and large Tibetan temple bowl may be played by the singer. Prayer of the Heart should be sung in subdued lighting perhaps by candlelight. The recording of theheartbeat should sound very tenderly and quietly throughout.

Mahamatar (Study Score). Mahámátar is written for Oriental or Middle-Eastern female voice, distant boys' voices (in a vast acoustic), tubular bells and muted strings. The music is an invocation to the Great Mother Mahámátar in Sanskrit, and to the Theotóke (God-bearer) in Greek. Originally written to accompany a fi lm by Werner Herzog which deals with South American Indians who travel for many miles on their knees to venerate the miraculous Ikon of The Mother of God of Guadalupe. Mahámátar may be performed by a solo voice or alternatively the melody could be played by a solo cello, with decorations and improvisations by the singer.

Anthem taking liturgical text premiered by the Tallis Scholars in 1997.Quoting Tavener: In this work The Hymn of the Unwaning Light massive monolithic and resplendent with the joy of the Risen Christ alternates withthe Proclamation of Easter and with the Processional Angels in the Heavens. The Proclamation of Easter is sung in Greek first by a male voice (the Psaltis) and finally by the whole choir. The Psaltis is the chief singer atGreek Orthodox services and the soloist must immerse himself in this style of singing.
