Myths and legends of dragons have stirred our imaginations down through the ages. Between Earth and Sky is a programmatic work opening with mystical strains and haunting melodies. The pace quickens as our beast takes flight and soars over the countryside; musically propelled by a driving 3/4 pulse and powerful thematic statements. All beautifully paced with variations in textures and dynamics, this is an effective and appealing work for young players.

ISBN 9780571539109. English. Libretto by Nick Drake; set to music by Tansy Davies.
Between Worlds, the highly anticipated operatic debut from Tansy Davies to a libretto by Nick Drake, opened at London's Barbican Theatre on April 11, 2015. A bold and highly individual response to the events of 9/11, the opera---commissioned by English National Opera---brings Davies and Drake together with acclaimed director Deborah Warner. A disparate group of individuals is trapped high up in one of the Twin Towers, caught between earth and heaven, life and death. As the work progresses it opens out to a universal panorama of human beings in extremis. Drake's libretto deftly weaves together a wide variety of texts, from actual communications sent on the morning of 9/11 to passages from the Latin Requiem Mass.

The hymn Nun ruhen alle Walder (Now All Forests Rest), arranged by J.S. Bach (No. 6, So sei nun, Seele, deine, from Cantata BWV 13), is a guiding light throughout this four-movement composition. Pütz wrote this work as a musical outcry against the wilful, profit-driven destruction of our environment. When Bach used the word ruhen (to rest) over 350 years ago, it probably had a different nuance from the meaning it has today. At the beginning of the 21st century - the so-called age of progress - nun ruhen alle Walder should mean now all forests die . Massive industrialization and globalization, coupled with pure greed, corruption, political scandals, an ever-wideninggap between the rich and poor, and other such senseless human actions, are pushing our blue planet closer and closer to the point of no return. This work is not intended to be a ranting accusation. It should remind us of the beauty and harmony that can exist all around us in nature, if we take care of it. Pütz hopes that this will, one day, help put a greater emphasis on humanity's survival, and coexistence with nature rather than the exploitation described earlier. All four texts were created by Australian poet Graeme King, whose works were discovered by Pütz, by chance on the internet. Pütz was especially captivated by King's clarity, and intrigued by the possibilities of adapting and melding the strong rhythmical structure of King's writing with his own musical language. The four movements are as follows: 1. Tears of Nature 2. Grrrevolution 3. Stand up! 4. Tomorrow The world premiere of Four Earth Songs took place on 7 July 2009 at the 14th WASBE-Conference in Cincinnati (USA). This work is dedicated in friendship to Jouke Hoekstra, conductor, and the Frysk Fanfare Orkest (the Frisian Fanfare-Orchestra). Tears of Nature 2. Grrrevolution 3.Stand up! 4. Tears of Nature 2. Grrrevolution 3. Stand up! 4. Tomorrow Die offizielle Uraufführung von Four Earth Songs fand am 7. Juli 2009 statt, anlasslich der 14. WASBE-Konferenz in Cincinnati (USA). Grrrevolution 3. Stand up! The aria Welt, packe dich, ich sehne mich nur nach dem Himmel (BuxWV 106) to a text by Justus Sieber from his book Poetisierende Jugend (1658) is composed for two sopranos, bass, two violins, violone, and basso continuo. After an instrumental Sonata, the five verses, interrupted by instrumental ritornelli sections, are presented by the different voices. The turning away from earthly things and the contrast between earth and heaven are illustrated in every verse by the change to 3/4 meter. The cantata ends with the repetition of the opening line of the poem Welt, packe dich and a rhythmically concise triad motif.

Strat oscape, by Swiss composer Gauthier Dupertuis, is a colorful and contrasting work for wind orchestra, depicting the view of our earth as seen from the stratosphere. This voyage into the sky is pictural, but also metaphorical, as it is also about distancing from our world. The work is divided into five sections: I Ignition!, II Broadness & The Big Blue, III Stars Shining from Down to Above, IV Destructive Forces, V One and Only Home Five contrasting movements, starting with Ignition in which Gauthier Dupertuis tries to musically convey the majesty of our planet seeing if from the atmosphere, ending with One and Only Hope, as the title say, a message of hope. In between three movements that depict the broadness of the landscapes of our planet (second movement), the fragility of our earth at night with only the stars shining (third movement). But also sheer reality in the fourth movement when the composer translates into music the damage caused toour planet by us human beings. Stratoscape: a fantastic view of Planet Earth!

Texts (in English and Sami) by Rose-Marie Huuva, Rauni Magga Lukkari, Timo Malmi, Aila Meriluoto, Leena Morottaja and Nils-Aslak Valkeapaa. Transl. by Veikko Holmberg. Compiled by Outi Tarkiainen. Program note: Eanan, gida nieida (in Engl. The Earth, Spring's Daughter) is a mythical epos illustrating the core experiences of the North from the history to our times. The text is a vast collage of Sami poetry - the Sami people being the only indigenous people in the Europe. The strong mutual bond between the generations and the Sami culture's cyclical perception of time are present also in the structure of the work: the music unfolds in layers and cycles, to be born again and again. The work was commissioned by three northernmost professional orchestras in Europe: Lapland Chamber Orchestra (FIN), Norrbotten Chamber Orchestra (SWE) and Arctic Philharmonic (NOR). Dedicated to John Storgards and Ulla-Maija Kanerva. First performance: Lapland Chamber Orchestra 1.9.2016, cond. John Storgards, Virpi Raisanen, mezzosoprano. Commission ed by John Storgards, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and Nordic House in the Faroe Islands. Dedicated to the composers daughter Malan. Preface / Programme note: From the Edda verse 31 Three roots there are that three ways run Neath the ash-tree Yggdrasil, Neath the first lives Hel, neath the second the frost-giants, Neath the last are the lands of men. The idea behind the Symphony is the story of Yggdrasil, The Tree of Life, from the Old Norse mythology. The Ash-tree reaches all the way into the sky and has three roots, each growing into three different places. One root grows into the Land of Hel (Hel is the goddess of Hell), called Helheim, another into theLand of Frost-Giants, called Jotunheim, and one root grows into the Land of men, called Asgard. And the Ash-tree reaches into the sky. In the crown of the tree lives a squirrel, which moves fast around the tree and spreads gossip, both between the three roots and between three roots and the crown of the tree. The Edda is a large collection of Old Norse poems, collected in the 12th Century by the Icelandic poet and historian Snorri Sturluson. Sunleif Rasmussen, March 2015.
