Comp oser's Preface: Antithigram is coined from the words antithesis and program. The work is bi-thematic -- the first theme comprised of eleven notes, the second (beginning at measure 63) more like a chorale in structure. A four-note tone cluster (B flat, C, F sharp, B natural) appears in the first measure, and subsequently appears as an arpeggiated ostinato (B flat, C, and F sharp, in orchestra bells and vibraphone) that underpins and adheres subsequent sections. After the themes are treated in a number of traditional ways (two-voice counterpoint, canon, chorale, and diminution) they are joined at measure 110 in a polychordal statement. The work should be performed with energy, with special attention to a precise and lively style of articulation. Antithigram was composed in the Summer of 1977 and premiered by the East Carolina University Symphonic Band in April of 1978 with the composer conducting. Ensemble instrumentation: 1 Piccolo, 2 Oboe, 2 Bassoon, 1 Eb Clarinet, 4 Bb Clarinet 1, 4 Bb Clarinet 2, 4 Bb Clarinet 3, 2 Eb Alto Clarinet, 2 Bb Bass Clarinet, 1 Eb Contrabass Clarinet, 1 Bb Contrabass Clarinet, 4 Eb Alto Saxophone 1, 2, 2 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 1 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 3 Bb Cornet 1, 3 Bb Cornet 2, 3 Bb Cornet 3, 2 F Horns 1 & 2, 2 F Horns 3 & 4, 2 Trombone 1, 2 Trombone 2, 2 Trombone 3, 2 Baritone, Treble Clef, 2 Baritone, Bass Clef, 4 Tuba, 1 Timpani, 1 Percussion 1 (Xylophone, Vibraphone, Bongos), 1 Percussion 2 (Orchestra Bells, Tambourine), 1 Percussion 3 (Chimes), 1 Percussion 4 (Snare Drum, Tambourine, Triangle), 1 Percussion 5 (Bass Drum, Tam-tam, Cymbal-susp.).

The 48 Preludes by the Venetian composer Renato de Grandis (1927-2008) were composed, largely, between 1998-2002. It was only subsequently that he arranged them into 4 cycles of 12 preludes, drawing also from earlier compositions. Written in a traditional pianistic style, they are short sketches which are sometimes characterized by musical thoughts, sometimes by moods or by natural phenomena. The fourth volume presented here is once again divided into two cycles of 6 preludes each, with the first cycle paying tribute to the landscapes and towns of Friuli north of Venice.

The Quintets nos. 1-7, 9 and the 12 Variazioni sulla Ritirata di Madrid, for guitar and string quartet, are not listed in Boccherini’s autograph catalogues, nor in the Catalogo Boccherini y Calonje, nor in the Catalogue Baillot. However they are mentioned in the Catalogue Picquot, and they have come down to us through three non-autograph manuscripts and three unauthorized printed editions of the early twentieth century. The documentary evidence establishes their authorship, their dating and the relevant musical source, as the single movements for the most part are transcriptions of compositions for other instrumental settings. The primary source of the Quintets 1-6 is ms. Wc, Washington (DC), Library of Congress, Ms. M. 574. B Case, olim M. 572. B65 Case [RISM A/II: deest]. Written in Madrid in 1811 by François de Fossa, it derives from a copy prepared by Boccherini for the commissioner of the pieces, Francisco Borja de Riquer y de Ros, marquis of Benavent, an amateur guitarist and patron of Boccherini from 1796. The primary source of the Quintets 7, 9 and the 12 Variazioni sulla Ritirata di Madrid is ms. L520, a codex comprising 5 volumes, dating from the first half of the nineteenth century, certainly assembled at Bar-Le-Duc, the residence of Louis Picquot from 1832 to 1853, who probably was the commissioner and first owner. Upon Picquot’s death, the codex was sold at auction in 1904 by the Berlin antiquarian Leo Liepmannssohn as lot 520. In 1911 it was acquired by the Gitarristische Vereinigung of Munich. During the twentieth century this institution dissolved, and the ex lot 520 passed into anonymous private hands. Rediscovered and examined in 2010 by Andreas Stevens and Fulvia Morabito, the codex was acquired by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich.

Philip Sparke’s third symphony, A Colour Symphony, was commissioned by “sinfonischen blasorchester wehdel†conducted by Thomas Ratzek. In the five movements (white, yellow, blue, red and green) the composer creates links betweenthe instrumentation and harmonic elements and the actual colour of the spectrum the movement stands for. In order to create the greatest richness possible, Philip Sparke used a very large instrumentation including low woodwinds, harp, piano andcelli. A Colour Symphony is an impressive and iconic addition to the standard repertoire for large symphonic bands.
