Albion was commissioned by the Swiss Brass Band Federation as the test piece for the National Brass Band Championships of England, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Switzerland in 2001, and for Norway in 2002. The composition is dedicated to Markus Bach.Albion, along with Excalibur and Stonehenge, is the third major piece for brass band in which Jan Van der Roost took his inspiration from the British Middle Ages. Although the work is not based on an actual story there are unmistakable epic elements found in this symphonic poem. The piece paints a picture of the conquest of Albion (the earliest known name of the British Island), in which the listener is taken back to the timeof King Arthur and his legendary Knights of the Round Table.

Albion and Albanius is among the first operas in English, written to a libretto by John Dryden, and produced at the Dorset Garden Theatre, London, on 3 June 1685. Composed by the erstwhile Master of the King's Musick to Charles II, the score is of particular interest as representing the French style of Lully, unusual in English music at the time, and is in striking contrast to the score for Dryden's sequel to the work, King Arthur, with music by Purcell.

Commissioned by the Association for Music in International Schools, Albion Heritage is a folk song fantasy based on tunes from various parts of the British Isles. It opens with Brighton Camp (an English version of The Girl I Left Behind Me), which is treated to a variety of twists and turns. The slower section is based on the Scottish tune O Waly Waly (also known as The Water Is Wide), which dates from the early 18th century. This is followed by a robust setting of Men of Harlech, which is said to describe the repeated sieges of Harlech Castle in the 15th century.

The Last Invocation (d' - a flat'') and (d - e') The Love-Song of the Birds (e' - b'') and (e - g') The Two Vocal Duets, for 'soprano, baritone and violin with accompaniment of pianoforte', are important as being the first completed settings of Whitman by the composer, begun soon after his initial sketches for A Sea Symphony, and performed in 1904. Though there is a certain Wagnerian influence, the lyricism of these works is essentially English, and characteristically that of VW in particular. For the premiere, he provided an additional accompaniment of second violin, viola and cello ad libitum. Material for the second song is lost, but parts for the first are included with the score, though the composer considered the trio version as definitive, and the string-quartet experiment was not repeated at subsequent performances. Recorded by Mary Bevan (soprano), Johnny Herford (baritone), Thomas Gould (violin) and William Vann (piano) on Albion Records ALBCD029.

Firs t published in 1920, the Twelve Traditional Carols from Herefordshire have been entirely reset in a new and practical format, with the choral arrangements of the songs underlaid for all the verses and presented in open score alongside voice-and-keyboard versions for accompanied or solo performance. An acknowledged authority in the subject, Roy Palmer has provided fascinating notes on the texts and music. His preface places the collection in the context of Vaughan Williams's lifelong interest in folk song both as collector and creative artist, and of his collaboration with Ella Mary Leather, who did much to preserve the folklore heritage of her native county and of the gipsy tradition in particular. The Twelve Traditional Carols from Herefordshire have been recorded by baritone Derek Welton and pianist Iain Burnside on Albion Records ALBCD013.

During the 1993-96 seasons, Chen Yi had a three-year residency in San Francisco through Meet The Composer’s New Residencies program, simultaneously serving the Women’s Philharmonic, Chanticleer, and the Aptos Creative Arts Program. GE XU (ANTIPHONY) was commissioned by the Women’s Philharmonic as part of this residence, and the work is inspired by the vividly competitive antiphonal singing of the Zhuang minority and folk dancing tune of the Yi minority in Southern China. GE XU (ANTIPHONY) is included on the New Albion CD “The Music of Chen Yi.â€.
