Ballet pour six instruments (1927) - Édition critique de Christopher Hogwood-Bohuslav Martin (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in composing Ballets. La Revue De Cuisine was composed in 1927 and remains popular to this day. Incoporating many jazz characteristics La Revue De Cuisine is composed for Clarinet Bassoon Trumpet Violin Cello and Piano. Martin experiments with expressionism and the ballet has been described as ''pantomime-esque'' for its humorous depiction of kitchen utensils. As a varied substantial work Martin ''s La Revue De Cuisine isessential to the repertoire of any aspiring and enthusiastic ensemble of advanced musicians.

This is a truly exceptional work and one of the finest in the repertoire for a string duet. The two parts are individual and equal at nearly all times in the music. There are times when one or the other instrument has a dominant melodic line but then the subsidiary part always has considerable interest. Written for Violin and Viola.

The present edition was the occasion for returning to the work's sources mainly the composer's autograph manuscript but also among others the scores used during the lifetime of the composer by early performers such as Tancibudek and Lady Eveyn Rothwell Barbirolli. Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. Pastorales for Cello and Piano was published in 1931 and is made up of six pieces. Martinu himself was a violinist and the beginning of his experiments in composing for solo instruments saw him write for strings. Pastorales for Cello exemplifies the composer's influence of Stravinsky Debussy neoclassicism surrealism and jazz. The piece is excitingly virtuosic in its use of double stops complexrhythms chromaticism and ensemble between the Cello and Piano. As a varied substantial work for the Cello repertoire Martinu's Pastorales is essential for the advanced performer.

Composed in 1956 by Bohuslav Martinu the Sonatina for Bb Clarinet and Piano is a neo-classical piece. This work to be played as a single movement has been written in three different sections: Moderato Andante and Poco Allegro. The rhythms are reminiscent of a Polka and a March and the piece contains unexpected syncopation. Being one of Bohuslav Martinu‘s later works it was written in New York after he spent some time in Paris. Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a Czech composer and a violinist. In view of the musical and aesthetic challenges this work presents the cycle Puppets goes beyond the other pieces from this period which broadly speaking are didactic in nature and designed for the purposes of study. Martinu wrote the cycle between the years 1912-1925 and during this time he reworked and changed the pieces to the extent that Puppets I chronologically comes after Puppets III which is the earliest in the series. The third book (Puppets I) dates from 1925 and contains fiveshort pieces: Columbine Dances The New Puppet The Shy Doll Fairy Tale and finally The Puppets' Dance. Puppets I-III are a joy to play while providing a worthwhile source of study material and are an essential part of the repertoire of young pianists. Despite the extraordinary significance attributed to Bohuslav Martinu's 14 short Piano pieces entitled Puppets surprisingly little is known about the exact time and circumstances of their composition. It is however certain that these are the first works by Martinu which transcended his initial attempts at composition and they quickly found a publisher. Thanks to their lasting popularity particularly with young pianists they were published in numerous editions. The pieces take the characters of Italian commedia dell'arte as their theme: Pierrot Colombine and Harlequin. Also included are dance and ball scenes as well as scenesfrom the 'private lives' of the puppets. The three editions of Puppets were composed between 1912 and 1925 in reverse order. The works all differ from one another beginning with different aesthetic starting points and ending with Piano writing which gradually matures. Now the cycle is published for the first time in one volume. Martinu's Puppets now available in a collected edition- all three editions in one volume- newly revised based on available sources. New fingerings by Giorgio Koukl - preface and Critical Commentary by editor Ales Brezina (Cz./Ger./Eng./Fr.). Pohádka is included on ABRSM Piano Grade 6 syllabus 2017-2018
