Serenade no. 3 H 218. Unusual instrumentations were by no means the exception in the chamber music works of Bohuslav Martinu, most notably the works he wrote in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s being characterised by his experimentation with sound and form. It is from this period that four short serenades also originate (1932), each with a different instrumentation. The serenades were issued by the Prague publishing house Melantrich in 1949.
Their premiere took place two years previously on 16 October 1947 and was performed by members of the Prague Symphony Orchestra (FOK). Although the study score of the Serenades Nos. 1 and 3 was published while the composer was still alive, he was in fact not involved in preparing this edition: indeed, the performance material also appeared in print without his participation in 1954. It was therefore decided to use the autograph score as the principal source for this edition.

kleine Stücke für Klavier-This collection of fourteen pieces together entitled Puppets plays an exceptional role in the catalogue of early works by Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) namely in that it represents the first works by Martinu which transcended his initial attempts at composition and quickly found a publisher. Thanks to their lasting popularity particularly with young pianists they were ultimately published in numerous editions. (The way the pieces are numbered which the composer verifiably accepted however does not correspond to their actual chronological order - they were in fact written in reverse order so that Puppets III came first whilePuppets I is the latest in the series.)All three books of Puppets which emerged between the years 1912 and 1925 and despite their title differ from one another in their aesthetic approaches and progressive maturity are published by EditioBärenreiter in new revised urtext editions edited by Ales Brezina. This urtext edition with its relatively comprehensive preface describing the circumstances surrounding the advent of the work is supported by the latest research and an assessment of all known and accessible sources which the editor presents and clarifies in detail in his critical commentary to the second and third books of Puppets. The second book (Puppets II) is dated 1918 and contains the following works: Puppet Theatre Harlequin Colombine Remembers The Sick Puppet and Colombine Sings. Thanks to its witty musical ideas and the composer's empathy for children and their intellectual world Puppets has since its first edition always been highly popular among performers.

This is one of the best Cello concertos of the twentieth century and readily communicates the Bohuslav Martinu strong feelings for his homeland. Written over the Christmas and New year period of 1944-45 in New York it is full ofhis reactions to that last dramatic winter of the war and the desire to go home. It is an expansive work over 35 minutes in length in the standard three movements. Typically for Martinu the first movement is inModerato tempo. The opening gesture is highly characteristic: A pulsing rhythm establishes itself in the orchestra and a striving rising theme with a contradictory rhythm contends with it. The second movement Andante pocomoderato has a general pulse that is not much slower than that of the first. It is episodic with a faster central section and then a truly magical and heartfelt treatment of the main subject in which Martinu expresses hislonging for home. The final movement Allegro is a driving energetic conclusion with a solo cadenza that breaks the ongoing rhythm and provides a touching moment of contemplation before the joyous conclusion. This editioncontains a Piano reduction of the Orchestral part for rehearsal purposes.

Vier Klavierkompositionen für Kinder-The set of four Piano pieces for children ...(+)
Vier Klavierkompositionen für Kinder-The set of four Piano pieces for children titled Jaro V Zahrade (Spring In The Garden) H. 125 by Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) is here published in a new edition. The composer's autograph is missing today and therefore the editor Ales Brezina (whose changes are indicated in the musical text with square brackets) limited himself to correcting several obvious errors. He has retained the fingering suggested by Vilém Kurz who prepared the first edition.Perhaps the most visible change from earlier editions is omission of the titles of individual pieces in the set because it is very likely that they are not the invention of the composerbut rather were added later by the publisher or someone else. The Piano texture is simple and takes into consideration the instructive intention of the work whose greatest attributes are its lyricism and playfulness.Preface by the editor is published in four languages (Cz./Eng./Ger./Fr.).

An informative preface and critical commentary by Ales Brezina and Ivan Straus (...(+)
An informative preface and critical commentary by Ales Brezina and Ivan Straus (Cz / Ger / Engl / Fr) - A new practical edition at the forefront of Martinu scholarship - All existing sources consulted. The String Quartet no. 6 by Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) represents a distinct step on the journey which the composer characterised as his development from geometry to fantasy and for which the almost continuous use of the principle of developing variations restless harmonic development the pulsation of minute rhythmic values and inventive work with sound are characteristic. The quartet which was written in New York in the autumn of 1946 constitutes the beginning of the composer's later works in which moods freely overflow regardless of any predefined formal layout. The editors of the new edition (based on the composer's autograph) have carefully removed all of the problematic and somewhat arbitrary editorial intervention in the sole existing edition dating from 1950 (actually 1955).With its urtext edition of the 6th quartet Editio Bareneriter Praha has continued in its series of new publications of works by Bohuslav Martinu - quartets nos. 4 and 5 have already been published for this instrumental line-up.

Volume 2-Bohuslav Martin (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. Études Faciles À Deux Violons was published in 1932 and is made up of nine duets. Martin himself was a violinist and the beginning of his experiments in composing for solo instruments and small ensembles saw him write for his own instrument. The second volume of Études Faciles À Deux Violons provides intermediate violinists with alternativeand enjoyable studies addressing a variety of musical features. As a varied compilation Martin 's Études Faciles À Deux Violons is essential to aspiring violinists.
