Helene Liebmann, nee Riese, was born in Berlin in 1795 and participated actively as a child prodigy in Berlin's public concert life. She was taught music by the most renowned music teachers in Berlin: e.g. Franz Lauska. Between the ages of 15 and 21 she published a series of works. Nothing is known about her live after her marriage in 1813. The last mention of the composer is found in March 1835 when she met Clara Schumann in Hamburg. The Sonata for Pianoforte and Violoncello op. 11, here arranged for viola and piano, was first published in Berlin in 1806. Classical elegance in structure and imaginativeness in melody, ingenuity and brilliance, and wit and charm are the outstanding features of this work. The final movement is made up of seven variations on the theme La ci darem la mano from the opera Don Giovanni.
