Resolution is an exciting and dramatic work for the developing string ensemble. The modern harmonies and driving rhythms provide important teaching opportunities. The piece is a great way to begin or end any concert.Resolution starts out with a bold and aggressive statement that is one of the cornerstones of the piece. The minor tonality adds to the dramatic scope of the music. Be sure to bring out the major second suspensions that are prevalent throughout the opening section. M.17 starts the main body of the piece. The celli and basses provide the driving bass line. This bass line also functions as a melodic element. The violins add a new melodic element at m. 25. Next, violin 1 adds another layer at m. 33. This provides a major build up to m. 41, where there is a question and answer section between the upper and lower voices. The harmony here is aggressive, yet accessible. There is a big statement at m. 55 of all the previous melodic layers that drives us back to the opening material at m. 63. This restatement of the opening provides a dramatic and powerful ending.
