The “Two Pieces for string orchestra was composed for the Wooster String Ensemble, Joanne Cohen, Director, in 1989-90. Intended to be playable by performers of differing backgrounds and abilities, the work consists of two short movements of straightforward formal design and musical discourse.

The first movement Intrada, in modified sonata form, begins with a principal subject which alternates open-string pizzicato multiple stops with rapid scale passages based on the 0-2-3 octatonic scale. The second subject is more lyrical and found only in the exposition: it is omitted entirely in the condensed recapitulation. The movement ends with a quiet, elliptical coda, designed to lead into the following movement.

The second movement Intermezzo is slower and more lyrical throughout. Essentially a barcarolle, it is framed by an introduction featuring a small group of solo players.

The work was first performed by the Wooster String Ensemble, Joanne Cohen, Director, at The College of Wooster, April 17, 1990.
