The inspiration for this work was a lithograph by George Bellows titled Dance in a Madhouse. In it, four groups of asylum inmates are highlighted, and Leisner composed a dance for each. The movement titles clarify each of the scenes in the lithograph: I. Tango Solitaire, II. Waltz for the Old Folks, III. Ballad for the Lonely, and IV. Samba!
