The hymn "when I survey the wondrous cross" was written by Isaac Watts in preparation for a communion service in 1707.
Originally,  the hymn was named " Crucifixion to the world by the Cross of Christ "  It  has been called " the very best hymn in the English language "
Fanny Crosby wrote the text of " Jesus keep me near the cross ". The hymn was originally written as a Sunday School song and was first publishes in Bright Jewels for the Sunday School which was compiled by William Bradbury in 1869.
