Dating back to 16 century England, Coventry Carol
was traditionally performed in Coventry England as a part of a mystery play, "The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors." In this play, the carol refers to the event known as the "Massacre of the Innocents," in which King Herod ordered the slaughter of all male infants under the age of 2 living in the town of Bethlehem. Sung in the form of a lullaby, Coventry Carol depicts the mothers singing to their doomed children.

Even though "The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors" is traditionally performed during the summer, Coventry Carol is presently known as a Christmas tune. The carol was featured on BBC's Empire Broadcast on Christmas Day in 1940 shortly after the Bombing of Coventry in World War II. This broadcast concluded with the singing of Coventry Carol in the bombed out ruins of Coventry Cathedral.
