This piece for piano and string quartet (two violins, viola and cello) was written in 2002, and premiered the following year in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The piece is eclectic, jagged and technically exhilarating. It exists on a frontier between the present and the past, and between notions of "high" and "popular" art. As such it draws on influences as diverse as Dimitri Shostakovich, Ludwig van Beethoven, Alfred Schnittke, Sergei Rachmaninov and British and American progressive rock.
The recording features the Edinburgh Quartet, with the Russian pianist Alina Kolonitskaya as soloist. The Piano Quintet appears on the 2007 Edinburgh Quartet album 'Frontiers and Bridges', produced by Calum Malcolm and available on the Circular Records label:
