Es bewegt sich im Grenzbereich zwischen exakter Notation und dodekaphoner Tonhöhenorganisation einerseits und einem improvisatorisch-freien Duktus andererseits – eine Dialektik, die Zimmermann zeitlebens im Zusammenhang mit der Integration des Jazz in die Orchestermusik (oder umgekehrt?) beschäftigte. Dem Spiritual Nobody knows kommt dabei die Rolle eines klassischen Cantus firmus zu: vorgestellt zunächst im Soloinstrument – über dem Walking Bass der Kontrabässe und dem Terzpendel der hier erstmalig einsetzenden Hammond-Orgel – durchzieht es im vorliegenden Hörbeispiel die einzelnen Instrumentengruppen.
