The antiphonal scoring with the two quintets makes the work ideal for skilled high school or college players looking for a showcase piece. The sound of the piece is tonal, ranging from quiet contemplation to thundering assertion. It opens with a chorale-like 3/2 that lasts about four minutes, moving into a powerful three-and-a-half minute incantation, then bursts into a two-and-a-half minute dance in 7/4.
