Derek Hasted writes "Aura Lee, written about the America Civil War, was published in 1861, but is now a Public Domain melody (see the Public Domain Information project at www.pdinfo.com).
You may know it better as Elvis Presley’s Love Me Tender, although the words make that version a copyright song.
It’s a perfect beginner’s piece for flute, oboe or recorder in C.
The piano part is a homage to Bach’s famous Prelude in C Major, from “The Well Tempered Clavier.
About 50% of the Prelude features in this accompaniment to a beginner’s version of “Aura Lee”, and it turns it from a straightforward and perhaps uninspiring study into a concert item the audience will love!
