Published by Head and Stem Music (A0.1021138).False Awakening is scored for reed quintet and depicts the moments in which one believes they are awake when in actuality they are in a dream state. After an intense opening, featuring sustained dissonant chords in the upper lines, and a slow ominous bass line, the work unfolds into a kind of dream-like sequence replete with more animated sections of which include a solemn chorale. At times the opening section returns to help unify the work but more importantly remind the listener of the imposing dreamlike passages inherent in the piece.
