It is written in the comfortable key of D Major and has an emphasis on bowing and phrasing. The viola shifts between first and third position and alternates between alto and treble clef. From a teaching perspective, this is a great piece to reinforce treble clef reading since those sections are just one octave higher than the alto clef sections. The piano part is a true accompaniment and does not double the viola melody, building in intensity throughout the song.
