Published by Piper Publications (A0.1291890).Bach’s Italian Concerto BWV 971 was composed for a two manual harpsichord and was first published in 1735.The style is that of the Italian concerto grosso and clearly reflects Bach’s great admiration of the works of Antonio Vivaldi which he had studied extensively. The ritornello style opening and closing movements are lively and joyful enclosing the arioso style Andante of great melancholy beauty. In arranging the Andante I have shared the long melodic line between the five players which will require some careful blending of tone and tuning as the melody passes from player to player. The effect intended is that of a sympathetic conversation between good friends.
Players of advanced intermediate standard standard will, I hope, enjoy the challenge of this arrangement of this amazing music.
