During the composition of The Planets, Gustav Holst wrote the Japanese Suite at the request of Michio Ito, a Japanese dancer. The work consists of 6 short movements with some themes taken from the Japanese folk song the "Edo Lullaby". Michio Ito wanted to dance to a work derived from traditional Japanese music, however, Holst didn't know any, so Ito had to whistle several to him. Apparently, according to research at the Tokyo College of music, a note in the original score from the British Library claims Holst "composed for Michio Ito, a Japanese dancer who offered a subject other than Marionette Dance." and "some of the songs were not a transcription from Michio Ito". Also, this suite was not composed at the request of Michio Ito to perform on any particular occasion and there is no record that Michio Ito had ever used the composition at the 

This arrangement features a prominent piano part and instrumental solos for more unusual instruments are cross-cued as appropriate. Contrabassoon and Contrabass Clarinet parts are provided and are identical, should you wish to use one or the other.
