Die Entstehungsgeschichte von Medtners einzigem Kammermusikwerk größerer Besetzung erstreckt sich über mehr als 40 Jahre. Er begann mit ersten Skizzen 1903/04 im Alter von 24 Jahren, die Uraufführung fand erst Ende 1950, ein Jahr vor seinem Tode statt. Die Komposition ist religiös motiviert, einzelnen Passagen liegen Texte der Bibel zugrunde. Ein anspruchsvolles, spätromantisches Kammermusikwerk.
