I have learned the classical and jazz traditional fingerings for the chromatic scale. Watching Pat Martino over the years I learned that he always shifted on his first finger whether going up or down. It makes more sense to me. It's a stringer finger and also more accurate. He actually used consecutive first finger shirts to negotiate position shifts. I presented this at the nut here, but the same pattern can be used on the first fret or anywhere on the neck. Be sure to reach behind the nut with your first finger when in that position so you are practicing the same pattern wherever you are on the neck.
