The 16-page score for mixed SATB choir and piano accompaniment takes about 4 minutes to perform.
The harmonies are often quite dense with the 8 voices all being different, but both harmonies and voices are also kept natural/classical, which should make performance easier than what the score might immediately indicate.
The score calls for soloists, but those should really be selected members of the choir, possibly taking turns, or even performing as small groups of 2-3 voices, contrasting the tutti group.
The score provides a detailed display of the harmonies used, so alternative accompaniment of for instance a band or an accordion should be relatively simple, as the piano role is mostly supportive of the voices.
The voice ranges are as follows:
First soprano: D4-G5; second soprano: D4-E5;
Alto: G3-D5;
Tenor: C3-D4;
Baritone (first bass): G2-D3; Bass (second bass): D2-A3.
The piece is a satiric ballade, grabbing the irony in Stephen Foster’s old classical song, in which the negro slaves pretends to mourn their dead master, but really are mocking him, a point that can argued to be well hidden in the original song (and possibly not even intended?), but it is brought out here as the pivotal point of the whole song.
This version is NOT suggested to be performed at a funeral for a loved one!
