Stewart (A0.1394367).“The first Nowell” (The First Noel), in its many evolutions over 400 years, remains beloved not necessarily for its ‘tune’ as much as the story it has to tell – ‘angels’ announcing to the shepherds “Nowell, Born is the King of Israel”, and then continuing with the journey of the ‘magi’. This 2024 setting of the traditional English carol speaks to the mood, the character, the atmosphere of the ‘first’ nativity, giving pause to reflect on that time of wondrous awe. This arrangement uses five of the nine original verses to tell its tale. It is scored for a traditional SATB ensemble, using 8-part [SSAATTBB] divisi for color. Piano provides the accompaniment.
