Petersen (A0.973252).Capriccio is a composition in one movement for flute and piano, 4-5 minutes in duration. I composed Capriccio in 1986 while I was in graduate school at the University of Minnesota. It was first performed by several students at recitals and studio classes. The form is sonata-allegro. The first theme utilizes irregular, fragmented ideas passing back and forth between the flute and piano. The second theme consists of long, lyrical lines in the flute complemented by a syncopated pattern in the piano. Capriccio may be performed as a solo piece or paired with its companion piece, Pastorale.
