The first verse frames the melody in an Adagio 3/4 feel, with the melody in the alto range. The second verse uses the traditional rhythms with thick harmony voices reminiscent of handbells, growing from a few treble notes to a deep bass. Appropriate any time of the year, but especially appropriate in Advent or for a communion service, as the hymn recalls the great mysteries of Christ's incarnation and his presence with believers.
