It commences with a whizzy Toccata to get the audience in the mood before announcing the Themes. These lead to a set of Variations, which includes one where the player will need a plunger mute along with ad libitum pitch bends and growling to create a somewhat inebriated feel, all leading to the last energetic movement. When entertaining children or in a less formal setting, the composer has often described each variation, such as Pagliacci (Clown), Jumping Bean, Tarantella and Late for Dinner. The composer invites the player to play straight through or be as entertaining as you want.
