Sonata No. 3 for Trombone and Piano was written for American trombonist Mark Lawrence. It is tonal throughout, in three movements. The work is demanding in both technique and ensemble, but should be truly enjoyable to play and hear. The first movement, marked "Moderato giocoso", is in sonata form in the key of G. The exposition is played muted, moving abruptly into a driving and open development, centered in D minor. The recap starts open, then re-employs the mute for a quiet close. The second movement is a beautiful, flowing song "Lento con espressione", in D-flat major. It shifts to C# minor for a muted mid-section, then returns to the open horn in D-flat major to close.  The third movement is marked "Allegro gioioso".  It is a driving 2/4, based around C Major, and briefly muted in the middle. Difficulty level for both instruments is medium-advanced. Total performance time is 15:30.  Member, ASCAP.
