Each composition encodes the donor’s first name ("praenomen") as a musical motif, which is stated before the start of each piece. It also serves as a sketch that is loosely based on some aspect about the subject: 1. The classical-style "Katies kleine Sonatine" is a pun on "Katie Cline" and "Eine kleine Nachtmusik"; 2. Garrett is a proudly unusual character and his piece is vaguely atonal at times; 3. Jennie is a generous and deep soul, in a way that reminded me of Beethoven’s Andante cantabile from the Pathétique sonata; 4. "Barbara’s second commission was an occasion for me to explore a Chopinesque etude style and unlikely harmonies; 5. Jamie is boisterous, fiercely devoted, strong-minded, and plays ukulele. The pieces can, of course, be enjoyed on their own merit.
