While the modal melodies are based on Ancient Greek Music, which has its own characteristic intervallic structures and atmosphere, and uses Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian modes, the tonal melodies use major and minor scales. The melodies are each 16 measures long and are ordered according to the level of difficulty, taking into account the structure of the intervallic and musical elements. As new scales and objectives are presented, they are indicated above the melody. These melodies may be used in dictation or read with voice or by instrument or may be used in other educational methods. In all of these studies, the melodies should be done slowly at first. Then the speed may be increased gradually if necessary.
