Gustav Merkel was a German composer and organist, whose music was highly influenced by Felix Mendelssohn. While most of his compositions were written for the organ, he also wrote choral and piano pieces.

This arrangement of Notturno was originally a piano solo piece, and does great as an instrumental solo with piano accompaniment. It makes good use of the clarinet's range, while not being too difficult. The melody is accessible without being predictable. As a whole, it’s quite a lovely piece.
