The three movements of this work are written in the romantic style of Mendelssohn using original themes by him, the 1st mvmt Allegro maestoso the beginning of the "Elijah" choir "Be not afraid, saith God the Lord”, the 2nd mvmt Andante cantabile a motive of the 2nd theme from the 2nd movement of the violin concerto in e minor. The 3rd mvmt Allegro quotes a melody phrase from the "Elijah" choir"Blessed are the men who fear him”.
