Nicknamed "Big Money" by Wynton Marsalis, Rodney played for years with trumpeter Roy Hargrove, whose recordings in the '90s were hugely influential for me. "The Left Side" was the title of one of the tunes Roy wrote for the group, and it's inclusion in my title was an additional reference to the importance of this time in my musical development. I tried to capture something of the spirit of that time in the composition, and the fact that Ron Blake was also a member of these important Hargrove ensembles added extra weight to the recording for me.
