Ohne die Bekanntschaft mit dem Klarinettisten Heinrich Joseph Baermann (1784-1847) wäre Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) wohl nicht auf die Idee gekommen, ein so reiches Werk für die Klarinette zu schaffen. Webers Klarinettenkompositionen gehören bis heute zu den Klassikern der Klarinettenliteratur. Baermanns Sohn Carl hat dazu wesentlich beigetragen. Carl Baermann (;Anmerkung: Auch die Schreibweise „Bärmann ist üblich) (1810-1885) war der berühmteste Schüler seines Vaters. In seinen Revisionen berücksichtigte er die Aufführungspraxis seines Vaters.
