Ludwig Thoma's "Heilige Nacht" ist als eine echt bayrische Weihnachtslegende wohl sein bekanntestes Werk geworden. Die darin enthaltenen "Gesänge" gliedern das Werk in bestimmte Abschnitte und Schauplätze. Sie wurden verschiedentlich in Musik gesetzt. Hans Seidls Vertonung gewann, auf Grund ihrer tiefen Empfindung für das Wesen der Volksmusik, unter den Volksmusikanten die meisten Freunde.Seine Gesänge und Spielstücke sind für Dreigesang, Hackbrett, Zither und Gitarre vorgesehen; doch können auch andere Melodieinstrumente herangezogen werden.
