Karg-Elerts (1877-1933) Freundschaft mit dem Flötisten Carl Bartuzat war für das Flötenrepertoire ein bedeutendes Ereignis. Sie lernten sich in einem Militärorchester während des 1. Weltkrieges kennen. Bartuzat forderte Karg-Elert kompositorisch heraus, war er doch ein vollendeter Flötist, der neuen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten gegenüber offen war. So entstand auch diese Sonate, originell und vielseitig.
