O Lord, Hear my Prayer : Introduction, Theme and Variations on a Theme by Jacques Berthier.

Variations for solo guitar written from September to December 2019, after one year intensively studying Bach, Brahms and Sor's studies. The original choral piece is one of many songs composed by organist Jacques Berthier (1923-1994) for the Christian community of Taizé.
- The slow "French-style" introduction pays tribute to lutenist Silvius Leopold Weiss, on the main notes of the theme. It must be performed in a baroque manner, with very "tight" dotted rhythms and ornaments.
- Then comes the original theme in four voiced vertical chords. It should be played with a soft and full sound.
- Variation I introduces appogiatures, the notes surmounted by a horizontal line are therefore further accentuated ("appoggiare" : "press") and vibrated. The upper voice dominates the accompaniment.
- Variation II is a delicate accompanied melody, of romantic essence. The binary-ternary superposition shouldn't disturb the tranquility of the chant. Repeats can be ornamented ad libitum.
- Variation III is the most virtuoso and the most rhythmic one : observing silences and articulations (accents, sforzando, staccato, tenuto) is fundamental. Each motivic element in its own range (bass, medium, treble) can be treated as an instrument in its own, like in a string trio for example.
- Variation IV, the freest one, presents a richer harmony. The "appoggiatura" chords, indicated by a tenuto symbol, are wide, thick, accentuated like in a saraband. Exacerbated pathos in this variation radically counterbalances the "mechanical" aspect of the preceding one.
- Variation V, the most contrapuntal one, takes up the theme accompanied by an uninterrupted flow of eighth notes on the bass. The final section, starting at bar 182, is four voiced. While the soprano quotes O Lord, Hear my Prayer's oboe chant, other parts share whole notes, theme's "half note, quarter note, quarter note" rhythm, and eighth note scales turn by turn. The last eighth note pattern (bar 196 then 197) imitates, in diminution, the last phrase of the upper voice (bars 194-195).
