Der auf Sylt geborene und in Marburg verstorbene Gustav Jenner komponierte drei Violinsonaten, darunter diese 1903 erstmals veröffentlichte Sonate in a-Moll. Jenner wurde 1888 Schüler Johannes Brahms‘ und übernahm viel von dessen Stilistik in seinen Kompositionen. Sein Oeuvre konzentriert sich auf die Gattung Lied und Kammermusik. 1895 bis zu seinem Tod wirkte er in Marburg als Dirigent und Professor und prägte das kulturelle Leben der Stadt nachhaltig.
