Composed by Scott Joplin (1868-1917). Arranged by Stephen W. Burch (ASCAP). Chamber,Ragtime. 23 pages. BurchMusic #940901. Published by BurchMusic (A0.1356229).

Scott Joplin (1868-1917) is known to have composed over 80 pieces for piano, only 5 of which are waltzes. It is thought by some scholars that Bethena was composed as a memorial to his wife “Freddie” who tragically died just 10 weeks after their wedding. This arrangement for String Quartet features melody lines in all four instruments. The Youtube video and mp3 recording take all the repeats, making it longer (6:04) than most of Joplin’s other pieces. My quartet usually takes no repeats (all 2nd endings) which makes the length about two minutes shorter.
