Program notes: This beautiful American folk song from the early 19th century finds its simple majesty here in concert band setting. With chorale sections and a beautiful bassoon and bass clarinet duet, the piece marches home with a resounding tutti.
Rehearsal notes: Balance and blending here are essential to let the melody instruments be heard above the chorale moments. Accompaniment instruments must breathe together and pay careful attention to phrasing.
The bassoon and bass clarinet duet at rehearsal figure B must be a showcase of two warm and beautiful tones. Other instruments entering must be soft and pretty, never drawing too much attention to themselves.
At rehearsal figure C, the horns and low brass sustain their chords as the drumroll signifies the start of the final, majestic section.
