First released by Leonard Cohen on his 1984 album "Various Positions", the song was not a big hit at the beginning, and only gained popularity thanks to cover versions by other artists (most notably John Cale's 1991 tribute, and Jeff Buckley's 1994 recording).

Worldwide interest in the song also increased a lot when it appeared in DreamWorks' 2001 computer-animated film "Shrek". Over time, it became one of the most used songs in film and TV soundtracks, and one of the most recognizable ballads ever written.

"Hallelujah" is frequently performed at various emotional events (from funerals to weddings), and even became used as a Christmas song!

After Leonard Cohen's death in 2016, his original recording entered the American charts for the first time.
