Published by Robert Brosnan (A0.1419790).Originally for piano, Piece in the Canonic Style was written when Sergei Rachmaninoff was a teenage student at the Moscow Conservatory, presumably as an exercise for one of his composition teachers. It is a fugue in the style of Bach but with some of the charm and sparkle that would be hallmarks of Rachmaninoff's later work: A fusion that is uniquely "Bachmaninoff".
The Canonic Piece has been arranged by Robert Brosnan for mixed clarinet quartet. A score is included plus parts for E-flat clarinet (with alternative 1st B-flat part), 2nd B-flat clarinet, alto clarinet (with alternative basset horn part), and bass clarinet. The bass clarinet part does not extended beyond a low E.
