They were part of Bach's efforts to provide musical education to his wife and children from previous marriages. The suites blend French and German styles, featuring a series of dances in the same key, such as allemande, courante, sarabande, minuets, and gigue. Despite being labeled as "French" suites, Bach did not give them this title himself. The French Suites are known for their moderate difficulty level compared to Bach's other keyboard works, such as the English Suites.
