Composed by William P. Gorton. 20th Century,Contemporary,Sacred,Spiritual. Full Performance. Duration 167. William P. Gorton #6118889. Published by William P. Gorton (A0.1071038).

"Prayer to the Motherworld," with text by Gerard Manley Hopkins, is a mystical supplication that invokes a divine essence that brings a sense of unity, peace, and security. Allusions to the world of nature tie the spiritual and natural worlds together in a lovely supplication. This haunting anthem, with a beautiful, arpeggiated accompaniment leading to a colorful climax would be appropriate for any good high school choir through more advanced choirs. Appropriate for either concert or church use. Can also be used as a solo.

Lyrics:
Be thou then, O thou dear Mother, my atmosphere,
My happier world, wherein to wend and meet no sin.
Above me, round me lie, fronting my forward eye
With sweet and scarless sky;
Stir in my ears! Speak there of God’s love, O live air,
Of patience, penance, prayer!
[O] World-mothering air, air wild,
Wound with thee, in thee isled,
Fold home, fast fold thy child!
-- Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889)
