It is impossible to imagine today's cello lessons without the works by Jean-Baptiste Bréval (1753-1823).This sonata is the first of the Six Sonates non difficiles pour le violoncelle Op. 40 (1795). To this day it remains popular among cello teachers and pupils alike. Because of its comfortable tonality and technical simplicity, it is an interesting classical sonata for cello students who are experienced in playing in first position and do not shy away from occasional excursions into other positions.As a performance piece, the sonata can be accompanied either by a second cello, as in Bréval's original version, by piano, or even by both instruments. In 1880 Richard Strauss began composing the 'Sonata for cello and piano' op. 6. Before it went to print in 1883 he revised the complete piece. Only the first movement remained unaltered. Strauss dedicated the 'Sonata for cello and piano' in F major to his friend Hans Wihan (at that time solo cellist with the court orchestra of Munich) who also took part in the premiere of the piece in Nuremberg.

The sonatas published in 1732 in Amsterdam, London and Paris under Benedetto Marcello?s name are to the present day firmly established in the cello repertoire. Although Marcello?s authorship is not undisputed ? by this time, the composer had already specialised in sacred works ? the musical beauty of the sonatas is all the more captivating. This four-movement F major Sonata offers all cellists well-versed in the first four positions a good introduction to the classical literature and to reading tenor clef. In this Urtext edition, the figured continuo part is additionally furnished with an easy-to-play keyboard realisation by Wolfgang Kostujak. The enclosed solo part provides fingerings and bowing marks for the cellist ? and thus the optimal provisions for a class recital!

for Violoncello and Piano-Cesar Franck?s Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the Violin repertoire a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.Franck?s friend the cellist Jules Desart was so impressed when he heard the Violin Sonata performed at the Société nationale de musique in Paris that he adapted the work for his instrument. This arrangement was first published in 1887 by inserting the Cello part into the Piano score of the original edition. For this purpose thePiano score had received a new cover and the publisher had expanded the title of the composition to ?Sonate pour Piano et Violon ou Violoncelle?. This version by the cellist Jules Delsart for Piano and Violoncello is the only arrangement of the work authorized by the composer and its first edition represents the main source for Bärenreiter?s new scholarly-critical publication.This Barenreiter edition also includes a separate movement ?Mélancolie? first published after Franck?s death in 1911 again for the same instrumentation Piano and Violin or Violoncello.
