From early in the 17th century until the form engaged the interest of Johann Sebastian Bach various notable German composers - including Rosenmüller Fischer Fasch and Telemann - had contributed to the development of the orchestral suite or 'Ouverture' which name betrays its French theatrical origins. From Bach himself only four such suites have come down to us due to the diligence of C.F.Penzel who was a student at the Thomasschule from 1751 and who made copies of Bach's MSS he found there. Thus neither the dates nor the order of composition of the suites can be established with any certainty. As to the present suite in B minor recent criticism suggests that Bach'sidiomatic flute writing in this popular suite would even in 1737 or later have been considered fashionably up-to-date even in Paris. It has also been suggested that the suite could have been written expressly for Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin principal flautist of the Dresden Court Orchestra.

This chorale movement is one of his most enduring works however the melody was originally composed before Bach’s time in 1642 by Johann Schop. Utilising the already existing melody Bach wrote this setting of Jesu Joy Of Man’s Desiring in 1716 as the 10th and last movement of the church cantata ‘Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben’ (BWV 147) one of the over three hundred cantatas written by the master of the Baroque period.This edition of the familiar melody which is often performed at weddings and Christian festive seasons like Christmas and Easter is arranged for SATB Chorus and Organ. All four verses of the lyrics are provided in English translation along with the original version in German.

Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. Bach would almost certainly have approved of this arrangement of his organ work (BWV 582) for string quartet by John Cooley, as it conveniently has four contrapuntal parts, and he was well known for making arrangements of his own works, according to instrumental resources at his disposal. Moreover, the parts mostly fit well within the ranges of violin, viola and cello, although notes have been raised by an octave in a few places. This quartet version is therefore simply the four parts written out separately, following Bach?s original version note for note. It is quite ?notey? but straightforward and accessible technically to reasonably good players as there are no tricky rhythms or high notes. The hymn 'Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder' was written in the 16th century to the tune of 'Herzlich tut mich verlangen'.
