Quasi Una Sonata

Often referred to by pianists as the 'Dante Sonata' it is the closing piece in the second volume of the 'Années de Pèlerinage' (HN174) and is now finally available as a single edition. In 1839 while under the spell of Dante's'Divine Comedy' Liszt had begun work on a 'fragment dantesque'. He later incorporated the work in revised form into the volume 'Italy' of his 'Années de Pèlerinage'. The single-movement sonata is based on the Canto 'Inferno' inDante?s poem. It describes the wild ride of the soul into hell in an effective manner finally closing with several forgiving chords in a kind of transfiguration?- one of the best examples of Liszt?s technical ingenuity andsound artistry.

Beethoven gave this sonata the unusual title ?Sonata quasi una Fantasia ? which it shares along with its opus number with the considerably more famous ?Moonlight? Sonata. Both sonatas along with the preceding sonata with the funeral march op. 26 and the three sonatas op. 31 soon to follow usher in Beethoven?s conquest of new musical territory in this genre. With a complex structure that oscillates between fantasia and sonata op. 27 no. 1 has long presented pianists with great interpretive challenges that once they have been overcome bring to light a true jewel. G. Henle Publishers now also offers this sonata in a new edition with provenfingering and interpretive suggestions by Murray Perahia and edited by the team of Beethoven experts Gertsch and Perahia.

The Sonata is one of Erkin's works which the casual listener may fail to attribute to a particular geography at a first hearing. He will however become absorbed by a unique sense of identity, surprising harmonies and rhythms which integrate with such sincerity and authenticity in the flow of the music. At a more attentive hearing, one can discover features of ancient Anatolian music which Erkin always transforms with extraordinary inspiration, enfolding audiences unfamiliar with this culture in a music which is often profoundly spiritual with an admirably woven polyphonic texture in which not one bar seems superfluous or out of place. The first movement Allegro is woven from two contrasting themes. The first is a vigorous progression in the middle register with contrapuntal elements quasi as counterpoint. A luminous second theme evoking folk tunes connects back to the first theme and the movement ends in a brisk tone. In the second movement Adagio molto sostenuto a profound, introspective first theme is developed in variations of exquisite lyricism. The imposing middle section which forms a rondo suggests latent unrest. Imbued with energy and determination, the final Allegro consists of abstracted elements of Anatolian folk music bearing the creative stamp of Erkin. The movement ends with an impressive crescendo. / Piano

Sonate Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach en la mineur pour flûte solo quasi constitue une contrepartie de la partita de son père Johann Sebastian dans la même tonalité. Créé en 1747, mais non publié jusqu'en 1763, il annonce le style sentimentale d'une nouvelle ère, par rapport à l'env. 30 ans de plus de travail de son père. L'édition est basé sur la première édition qui est caché parmi les oeuvres pour piano de C. Ph. E. Bach et d'autres compositeurs de l'anthologie 'Musikalisches Mancherley'. Une édition séparée, également publié en 1763, s'est avéré être un rejeton de la première édition avec le texte musical identiques et pourraient être éliminés en tant que source pour l'édition. Mais l'édition a également été basée sur une fin du 18e siècle exemplaire de la Collection Giedde à Copenhague qui est d'une grande importance à la littérature flûte. Bien qu'il semble également revenir à la première édition, il s'avère néanmoins avéré être un correctif contemporain à des carences de la première édition, dans certains passages. In seguito, oltre ad avere pubblicato quasi la totalità delle composizioni del Prete Rosso l?Istituto veneziano ha corretto e attualizzato le sue più antiche edizioni alla luce delle nuove conquiste musicologiche e con una precisa attenzione a quelle che erano le istanze che provenivano dagli esecutori ?storicamente informati?. Giuseppe Tartini non ha goduto di altrettanta fortuna. Dopo alcune edizioni assai poco accurate (si potrebbe parlare piuttosto di reinterpretazioni, quali furono tra le altre quelle del leggendario violinista Fritz Kreisler e di Riccardo Zandonai), legate prevalentemente alla sopravvivenza ottocentesca di alcuni brani (in particolare il Trillo del Diavolo, la Didone Abbandonata e le variazioni L?Arte dell?Arco) nel corso del XX secolo poche edizioni davvero attendibili sono state date alle stampe, in primis quelle della collana a cura di Edoardo Farina e Claudio Scimone (Le opere di Giuseppe Tartini, Carisch) ma anche grazie all?azione isolata di violinisti (Giovanni Guglielmo) e musicologi (Enrica Bojan e Agnese Pavanello). Ancora oggi siamo ben lontani dalla possibilità di avere una moderna e completa edizione dell?opere del Maestro delle Nazioni anche se grazie all?instancabile lavoro di Sergio Durante e con l?istituzione del ?Comitato Tartini 2020? si intravedono nuovi slanci e grandi opportunità. La mancanza di edizioni attendibili per gli interpreti si è sovente riverberata sulle esecuzioni - fossero queste inserite in saggi scolastici, concorsi internazionali o recital dei più noti virtuosi - al punto che è stato quasi impossibile liberare le opere tartiniane da tutta una serie di istrionismi e di stilemi ottocenteschi che ormai si erano profondamente radicati alla percezione di queste opere. La presente edizione mira quindi non tanto a fornire una nuova edizione critica (talune, ottime, già esistono) di queste quattro Sonate che sono state scelte per la loro notorietà, rappresentatività e bellezza quanto piuttosto a garantire agli interpreti, siano essi giovani studenti o affermati professionisti, un testo coerente e corretto. Per questo motivo in aggiunta ad una parte di violino priva di segni interpretativi abbiamo ritenuto utile introdurre una seconda parte di violino con diteggiature ed indicazioni dinamiche che potranno essere di giovamento sia per gli interpreti ?tradizionali? che per quelli interessati alle prassi esecutive storiche. ?Sonata quasi una fantasia? was the title given to it by Beethoven and yet the world of music knows it as the ?Moonlight Sonata? an epithet that was already around during the composer?s lifetime. ?The lake rests quiet under thelight of the moon at twilight; the wave thuds against the dark bank? wrote Ludwig Rellstab on the 1st movement in 1823. ?It is as if we catch sight of a colossal grave in the middle of a lonely plain palely lit by the sicklemoon? was what Wilhelm von Lenz wrote. Beethoven might have been influenced by the sound of the Aeolian harp as Murray Perahia and Norbert Gertsch explain in the introductory texts to this edition referring to the latestresearch. Perahia also provided the fingerings.

Beethoven composa sa deuxième « sonata quasi una fantasia » de l?opus 27 en 1801 entre sa première et sa seconde symphonie. Cette sonate fut rebaptisée « sonate de la Tonnelle » par ses contemporains. Ils imaginèrent le compositeur Beethoven composer cette ?uvre à l?ombre d?une tonnelle. En 1832, plusieurs années après le décès du compositeur, le célèbre titre de clair de lune fut évoqué par le poète Ludwig Rallstab. Celui-ci percevait dans le premier mouvement de la sonate une promenade nocturne au Clair de lune, sur le lac des Quatre-Cantons à Lucerne en Suisse. Cette ?uvre romantique est aujourd?hui universellement connue et restera un classique incontournable des pianistes. Marion Colas
