One of the greatest favorites of the Italian operatic repertoire, whose productions at London's Covent Garden in 1905 (featuring Enrico Caruso, among other luminaries of the day) and New York's Metropolitan Opera the following year first brought it fame.

Considered the greatest Italian opera composer since Verdi, Giacomo Puccini (1858--1924) created many of the most popular operas in the repertoire, including Madama Butterfly, La Boheme, Tosca, Manon Lescaut, and Turandot. His well-known gifts for lush melody and rapturous lyricism, along with his strong sense of theater, are amply evident in Il Trittico (The Triptych), a series of three highly individual one-act operas patterned after the Parisian Grand Guignol's three-part scheme of horror, tragedy, and farce. Il Trittico, which premiered at New York's Metropolitan Opera in 1918, consists of Il Tabarro, a somber, near-melodramatic tragedy; Suor Angelica, a sentimental tragedy with strong melodies and a mystic theme; and Gianni Schicchi, a delightful comedy, full of wit and vivacity, whose libretto was derived---surprisingly enough---from a few lines in Dante's Inferno. All three works appear in this single volume, reprinted from authoritative early editions.

SONATA CHO-CHO-SAN(Based on themes from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly)In the spirit of the great 19th-century opera fantasies for woodwinds, Michael Webster has created a concert trio on the many great arias from Puccini's Madama Butterfly. However, as its name implies, Sonata Cho-Cho-San is not the typical virtuosic operatic potpourri. Rather, it follows the plot, resembling a sonata mirroring Puccini's use of recurring and developing themes. Webster makes the most of the winds as versatile performers - equally suited to deliver Puccini's beautiful vocal writing, and to ornament and embroider the poignant themes in symphonic style. For advanced performers._______________________________________Text from the scanned back cover:Born in 1944, Michael Webster made his New York recital debutat Town Hall in 1968 with his eminent father, Beveridge Webster, as pianist.
